Northern Dvina

Cruises over Northern Dvina usually begin in Arkhangelsk.

Northern Region near the city of Arkhangelsk is the unique and original land. Ancient traditions and ceremonies, national craft, perfect wooden irchitectural constructions vere carefully kept here.

Ethnographic museum in Arkhangelsk presents exposiions about history and cultue of northern pebple. The mueum of fine arts shows products of northern painting and ooden sculpture. Northern ce in 25 km from the centre of Arkhangelsk. Best samples of ancient wooden constructions and villagers’ household goods are collected in the museum.

From delta of the Northern Dvina which flows into the White Sea, ships go to the river’s creek near the city of Velikiy (Great) Ustyug.

Velikiy Ustyug is one of the most exciting cities of Russian North. Picturesque views of the city leave unforgettable impressions in visitors’ memory. Spectacular view of Ustyug is created with numerous churches, monasteries and mansions of 17th-19 th centuries. The main religious ensemble of the city is Sobornoye Dvorishe (Cathedral Homestead). Another valuable architectural construction is MihajloArkhangelskiy Monastery of 17th century. On the opposite coast of the river is located church ensemble of the village Dymkovskaya. The most spectacular view of Ustyug opens from this place. Church of Ascension is the oldest monument of the stone-work architecture of Ustyug.

The city is considered as the «native land» of Father Frost - the famous magician, who brings New Year gift to children.

Moving along the Northern Dvina you will visit Kholmogory - the center of bone engraving. Another point of the route is Sol’vychegodsk - balneology health resort, placed near to Vychegda river. You will meet picturesque reserves: coniferous forest Sokolskiy and national reserve «Russian North».
