Cherepovets
Even citizen has a wish to live in a modem, beautiful, clean, and developing
town Where there is an efficient transportation system which takes you to work,
shopping, or leisure outing without a long wait for a bus. Where you could enjoy
a leisurely walk through the historical district on the newly bricked street.
Where you could have a place to meet at the fountain or the monument of a world-famous
artist Where you could stroll with the children across the Oktyabrsky Bridge
and amaze them that the bridge is so long. Where after leaving, you would have
a b yearning for coming back. Every citizen wants to have a feeling of being at home in his town. What do people do arriving at the place they want to live in? They build a house. Two monks - Afanasy and Feodosy - the disciples of Sergius of Radonezh the Venerable
are considered to be the first builders of Cherepovets. In the middle of the 14- century they settled here and founded the Voskresensky
monastery (the Monastery of Resurrection) that started the future town. The
town succeeded this decoration of the present Cherepovets, the Voskresensky
monastery, since then. Afanasy and Feodosy the Venerables are honored now as the founders of the Monastery
and the Saints of Cherepovets. Here the first historical street -Voskresensky Prospect - begins. In the 19*
century the center of the town was situated round the market square. It had
an unusual architectural octahedral shape. There is just one similar place in
the world - Vandom Square in Paris (And what remained after 1917 is just the
lanes «Kriuli» (crooked streets). In Old Russian provincial towns the market center was usually built up with
rows of stalls Cherepovets turned out to be an exception. One could perfectly
observe two remarkable temples. Voskresensky and Blagoveshchensky (of the Annunciation)
raced each other from both ends of the Prospect.
The rows of stalls were lodged at the ground flours of the houses at Voskresensky
Prospect. It was very convenient for the masters as they worked at ground level
and lived in the first flour.
Voskresensky Prospect (Sovetsky Prospect at present) Is one of the favorite
Streets of Cherepovets citizens. Moreover, the part of the lunes Kriuli regained
the status of the real square - the latest and very cozy. The history of the
town is in its name - Milyutinskaya. The citizens of Cherepovets know this name
of honor and Its history. Every citizen dreams to be proud of his town und to love It as he loves und
is proud of his home and family. Ivan Milyutln must have been such a citizen. This person was of great Importance
for Cherepovets. lie was elected a Town Head in 1861 and served at this post
for 46 years, till his death. It took only half a century for the small provincial town to become a large-scale
industrial and cultural center with navigation and railway. With the first telephone,
pavement and lighting like in a capital - by streetlights.
Cherepovets assumed the feature that still distinguishes it - the graceful
architecture of the ‘brick’ style. Will you ever have a wish to leave this beautiful
town?
There is no future without knowing the past - the first museum of the town was
founded. There is no Intellectual development without aesthetic education - the town garden
with the brass band, theatre and cinema began to work. There is no adequate self-actualization without education - II educational institutions
of various descriptions were opened due to I. Milyutin’s efforts. The main intention of I. Milyutin was to create a town where every citizen would
feel wanted and respected regardless of his or her class. Cherepovets is the native town of one more famous person. His elder brother Nikolay made the name Vereshchagin famous too. After studying
the secrets of cheese making he returned to Russia and created the first native
milk school. Everybody knows Vologda butter used to be called pans, Vereshchagin
and Stalin butter. It was made of boiled cream and was remarkable for its unique
flavour of nuts. Nikolay Vereshchagin contrived the recipe. By the end of the 19th century the house was sold, but the brothers did not leave
Cherepovets forever and often visited the town. The Vereshchagins had two favourite
country estates here, not far there was the family cemetery. A town becomes native when a man builds it with his own hands. The town takes
on the atmosphere of home And it is still HOME for the first builders of the metallurgical
plant - JSC Severstal at present - who came here in 1948. Those times, fifty years ago, it was the first business projected by the native
engineers, not by the foreigners. This postwar time was joyful, because people
were building, but not destroying. The building of Cherepovets and the plant made
the dream about peaceful life come true. People were constructing the town with
a lot of work places, with comfortable blocks of flats; new streets, squares and
stadiums appeared as well as Lenin Komsomol Park, a wonderful Komsomolets cinema Cherepovets was built with love and joy. Since then it has the ardour of youth,
optimism, yearning to move mountains. Cherepovets is one of a few Russian towns that have got the development strategy.
“Advantage Living Sphere” is a part of the strategy. For you to be willing to
live exactly here and to take care of the town. Many times Cherepovets took prizes at the All-Russian municipal improvements competitions.
Journalists gave Cherepovets a neat nickname - “the town of municipal happiness”. The citizens got accustomed to the regular transport, smooth roads and well-purified
water. As for the guests - they are surprised. Cherepovets has its own home holiday - The Day of the Town. It is celebrated in
November. It is snowing, it is windy... But regardless of the season that is the
most important and long-awaited day for the citizens.
It is people whom you come across even in the historical name of this district
- Cherepoves. According the Slavonic version cherep means “hill, height”, ves'
is the name of the Finno-Ugric nation once lived here.
The most important thing about the town is its citizens. The fourth generation of metallurgists, builders, and chemists IS pacing - to
the kindergartens yet - along Metallurgov, Stalevarov Streets, Domenshchikov Boulevard,
Stroiteley Avenue, Himikov Square (Metallurgists, Steelmakers Streets, Furnace
workers Boulevard, Builders Avenue, Chemists Square). Dear residents and guests of the town! Let us enjoy strolling with them through
the pages of our photograph album. Let us start from a cozy old district and proceed
to a modem town. Let us wonder at the industrial Cherepovets. Let us relax in
the musical town. Let us support the hockey players of Cherepovets. And you are
likely to smile at the merry faces of children. The town where children feel comfortable
is a dream of every citizen.
