Azov

Azov is the ancient town, through which ran the Great Silk Way. The century-long history of this small town according to our present day consid-eration, which is situated on the left side bank of the Don river, attracts concerned travelers with its antiquity and significance. Here, many centuries ago coexisted peacefully some Italian colony and minor fortress of the Golden Horde, while later on exactly here took place fierce battles be-tween Osman Turks and the Cossacks for posses-sion of this town.

Azov occupies the territory of the South-Western part of Rostov Region, on the left bank of the river Don. It is located 15 km from Taganrog Bay and 36 km from Rostov-on-Don. Azov has sea and land routes connecting it with the center of the region. Population – more than 80 thousand people.

The history of Azov begins more than two thousand years ago when the first settlements appeared in Azov Region. Azov was founded in 1067 and it is one of the ancient Russian cities. Mainly the history of the city is tightly connected  with Tzar Peter who made Azov a part of the Russian Empire. 

There are a lot of monuments and places in the city dedicated to the events of the past. In Azov the history of the Russian Fleet began. The city countryside is very picturesque. A lot of sunny days, plenty of fruits and vegetables and the atmosphere of the past – all these factors make one feel himself comfortable in Azov city.

Azov city is visited by more than three thousand tourists annually. Archeologists and travelers pay great attention to Azov. Tur Heyerdal called Azov “The City of Gods”. 

The excursion supposes visiting of the local museum, in which it is exhibited a unique skeleton of the Trogonteria mammoth (his age is about 600 thousand years), as well as getting around the monuments of the military and historic architectonics of the XVIII century and ascending to the fortress ramparts, from which it if witnessed a magnificent view of the Don delta. In addition, a fascinating voyage on the motor ship over Don river is awaiting you.
