Kholmsk

The municipal entity of Kholmsky rayon is located in south-western part of Sakhalin island on an area of 2 279 square kilometers.

It equals to approximately 2.5 per cent of the island area. But in the population the rayon ranks second in the Sakhallnskaya oblast after Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk among the other municipal entities. According to the census of 2002 here are registered 48.5 thousand inhabitants.

The municipal self-government Incorporates the top elected position of City Mayor, the representative body of the City Deputies Assembly and the executive body of the Administration. There are also law enforcement und boarder guard authorities.
