Nevsky Prospekt

Saint-Petersburg > Nevsky Prospekt

Nevsky Prospekt

Cars, boats and wolves The most tamous street of Russia was not always a thoroughfare for buses, taxis and automobiles. After it was laid down through forest lands and swamps in the beginning of the 18'" century, many years wolves used to wander hero. Boats were able to float right on Nevsky twice during its history, when the city Hoods occurred in 1721 and 1777.There are plenty of opportunitiesfor a bit of Lenin spotting. Finlyandsky Station was the site of Lenin'sfamous return from exile in April 1917, where Lenin clambered up onto a car to deliver his rallying cry. Out front of the station, a majestic statue of Lenin points the way to a radiant future, and at the entrance to the adjacent metro stop, Ploshchad Lenina, there is another Lenin mosaic. Other statues of Lenin can be found in the Botanical Gardens on the Petrograd Side , and across town at Smolny Institute where you'll also find statues of Marx and Engels. If you’re flying out, wave goodbye to Vladimir lllyich Ulyanov (Lenin’s full name) as you go past Ploschad Moskovskaya What’s In a name It was only in the 1760s that Nevsky Prospekt got it’s current name. With Peter I the Great still alive it was known as the Big I Prospekt, after his death it became Neva I Prospekt. The communists on their part, I known for their stunning renaming of many I historical addresses and buildings, decided I to name thefamous thoroughfare after the J revolution: the 25m of October Avenue. This last name luckily never came through.
