Novocherkassk

Novocherkassk is located in the North-Eastern part of the Rostov Region. It is 40 km from Rostov-on-Don. Population of the city – 198.8 thousand people.

In 1805 under the decision of ataman M.I. Platov new Don Cossacks’ capital was founded. The city with its wide squares, long prospects and beautiful promenades was built according to the best European standards of architecture. Starocherkassk – the former capital of Don Cossacks – with all its customs and traditions was transferred to the new place.

There are two triumphal arches on Podtelkova street and Gertsena street belonging to the early period of Novocherkassk development.

Voznesensky Cathedral (height - 74.6 km) is a real masterpiece of architecture. It is the third Russian great cathedral after Isaakievsky Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg and Jesus the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.

The monument to Ataman M.I. Platov, Ataman Palace and Museum of Don Land History form the center of Novocherkassk. Now the Municipal Council, city Administration and Cossacks Government sits in Ataman Palace . The Museum of Don Land History exposes the unique collections of pictures, cold steel, china, banners and rare documents dedicated to Don Cossacks way of life.
