Kostroma region > Kostroma city

Kostroma city

There is no need to tell anything to those who happened to be in Kostroma. They never will forget the atmosphere of this marvelous provincial town. If it is your first time in Kostroma, everything that you see there will remain in your heart forever. You will surely love Kostroma as much as its inhabitants love it.

Quiet narrow streets of "the pearl" of the Golden Ring of Russia remind of a fairy tale: wooden houses are truly captivating; they, as it seems, are decorated with laces made by Kostroma skilled artisans; gold-domed temples of monasteries and churches are admirable. Their peal carries your thoughts faraway from daily cares. One would wish the time stopped.

The most impressing sight of Kostroma is Ipatievsky Monastery located at the confluence of the two biggest rivers of the city the Volga and the Kostroma. This place amazes with its majestic view and its history, which is closely linked with the Romanov dynasty that use'- - -ule Russia for more than 300 years. By the walls of this monastery Michael nomanov was offered the Russian Crown to be the first Romanov ts«i. ,.e became the founder of the Romanov House. As a result of his rule. Russia turned into a powerful state.

Close to Ipatievsky Monastery, there is a unique museum of Russian wooden architecture in the open air. Dozens of wooden architecture monuments are collected here, which in combination with beautiful nature and the interior of the wooden huts totally recreate the atmosphere of a Russian village of the 19th century. For a reason this museum in a Kostroma suburb is justly considered to be one of the most representative museums in Central Russia.

In the centre of Kostroma, on the city's main square we can see the Fire Watch Tower. The construction of this unique building dates back to the 19* century. Once the Russian Emperor Nicholas I saw this structure and exclaimed: 'Oh, even in Saint Petersburg there is no such a beautiful building!' To the right and left of the Fire Watch Tower, the former Guardhouse building and the trading arcades are situated. These are unique specimens of architecture of the 19*century. Along with the Fire Watch tower, they form the image of the historical centre of Kostroma.

It is impossible to describe the magnificence of the architecture and the beauty of the nature of this town. You can only feel it when you are there. Welcome to Kostroma! You will make sure that Kostroma is a real pearl of the Golden Ring of Russia!
