The Vasnetsovs’ Country

The great Russian painters V.M. and A.M. Vasnetsov are Vyatka born.

The village of Ryabovo is the Vasnetsovs’ family estate. The Vasnetsovs lived here for over 20 years. The beauty of the native land opened up before the eyes of future painters Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1848-1926) and Appolinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1856-1933) in Ryabovo. They took the first lessons in painting and living here. The Vasnetsov brothers glorified the wonderful outskirts of the village: the marvelous woodland, blooming fields, and snow-covered areas.

When grown-ups and famous painters, Viktor and Apollinary came to their native village. Their parents were buried there.

About 400 persons live in Ryabovo and neighboring villages at present. The Vasnetsovs’ readings are held in the localities every year. Painters come here to draw sketches. Guests from the neighborhood arrive in the village to take part in folklore festivals.

Since 1981, the Memorial Museum has been working in the Vasnetsovs’ house preserved to present day.

The Kirov Regional Arts Museum founded on the initiative and with the assistance of the painters bears the name of V.M. and A.M. Vasnetsov.

The museum has a rich collection of paintings: about 18 thousand works of painting and graphic art, including 27 paintings by Viktor Vasnetsov and 25 – by Appolinary Vasnetsov, paintings by Shishkin, Levitan, Tropinin, Repin, Surikov, Aivazovsky, Saryan, and Kandinsky.
